Description
This is a very rare original pearlware and transferware mug / cup to commemorate the London Crystal Palace at the Great Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations held in 1851. It shows an image of the building from the outside with angels and many different objects that represent the exhibition. There is a wreath with the date 1851 and also the letters VR for Victoria Rex (Queen Victoria). It is in excellent condition, no cracks or repairs. The only spot I can see is a very small rough spot on the very edge of the top rim. When you rub your finger across it, you can feel it a little rough but it doesn't feel like a chip. This might have just been a spot where it did not get glazed (not positive).
It has that neat white bluish pearl color thus the name pearlware. The bottom is marked: "
Chrystal Palace.
" From what I found online, this was made in Staffordshire, England. Measures 3.25" tall with a diameter of 3.25". A very rare and excellent example of an early World's Fair item.
