According to The Official Red Book, the US Congress authorized the issue of nickel three-cent pieces "because their silver counterpart was hoarded by the public." The coin is composed of .750 copper and .250 nickel. Minting and distribution was initiated in 1865, the final year of the Civil War. All coins of this 25-year series were minted in Philadelphia. The coin being offered is from the final year of the series and was minted during the closing years of the great cattle drives of the American West. It has a clean, bright surface on the obverse and reverse. Both surfaces have some small toning points although they do not detract from the coin's eye appeal. This coin is displayed in a first generation holder. A signature for delivery will be required. The coin pictured is the one being offered. Thank you for looking.
